The Best Places to Eat Out In Exeter This Veganuary

Whether you’re trying Veganuary this year or looking for more vegan dining inspiration in Exeter, we have you covered for January and beyond.

We asked Kerrie, Exeter resident and Veganuary participant, to share her top picks for eating out in the city.

Kerrie is an educational psychologist, currently training to become a clinical animal behaviourist and has been vegan since 2023.

1. How on Earth Deli (South Street)

This is my all-time favourite deli-style vegan place to eat. Their plant-based seitan “meats” are delicious and so perfect in one of their sourdough bread sandwiches.

The place is a real treat with an amazing variety of healthy foods and sweet treats, too! My favourite dish is any of their sandwiches!

And it’s also my go-to for Christmas goodies. Find them on South Street.

2. Sprout Plant Café (Cathedral Yard)

New to Exeter and located on the cathedral green, I have already fallen in love after just one visit.

They serve a selection of delicious small plates, salads, dips and savoury rolls. I had the salad on my first visit which was so tasty, diverse and nutritious that it is already my favourite meal! Their chai latte was also amazing.

They make their sourdough bread on site and it was INCREDIBLE. A lovely small café with a local feel – and very friendly and welcoming.

3. Sacred Grounds (exeter)

Tucked away, but in the cutest location and with the best service, it always feels like a self-care day when I come here.

The food is healthy and warming, and it is an all-round pleasant place to eat.

Their menu is unbeaten by any vegan café I’ve visited and the way they present their food is just perfect.

My favourite dish would have to be ‘Sacred Benedict’ – with their special homemade poached ‘egg’ – such a wholesome meal and special treat.

4. Herbies (north Street)

Herbies is the oldest vegan/vegetarian restaurant in Exeter and still a great place to go.

Their menu is full of homecooked, wholesome meals and their desserts are to die for! I tend to go for the falafel wrap as my main, so that I can squeeze in one of the desserts!

A cute little restaurant with a homely feel and welcoming staff.
