Is Your Electricity Vegan?

Did you know that Ecotricity is the only energy supplier officially certified as vegan by The Vegan Society and Viva!, the vegan charity?

Many people don’t know that their energy supplier uses animal by-products in the production of their energy.

In fact, solar, wind and geothermal power all produce green electricity without using animals, but the production of biogas is a different matter. Many energy companies add animal by-products (silage, manure, etc) from the livestock factory farming industry to the mix to create gas or drive turbines for electricity.

Fighting the climate crisis

Using animal by-products in energy isn’t just an ethical question about respect for animals. Livestock farming is a major contributor to carbon emissions in the UK and around the world.

Energy companies which use animals to make energy are supporting the factory farming industry, which is a huge problem for the climate.

If we make conscious decisions about the food we eat and the clothes we wear, it makes sense to be aware of what’s powering our home too.

As green as it gets

Ecotricity became the world’s first green energy company when they started in 1995. Dale Vince, their founder, is a passionate vegan and is chairman of the world’s only vegan football club, Forest Green Rovers. Dale is also a Veganuary Ambassador.

Ecotricity’s certified vegan status means that they’re the only energy supplier where you know for certain that no animal by-products have been used in their energy supply.

Their goal is to completely replace electricity made by burning fossil fuels. Their electricity is 100% green – made from the sun and the wind. They generate about 10% of it themselves and the rest is certified green energy.

Their gas is a mix of fossil gas and sustainable green gas and they invest in direct carbon removal projects in Britain through the Carbon Bank.

What really makes Ecotricity different from other energy companies, including the ‘green’ ones, is that they turn their customers’ bills into new sources of green energy.

They’ve been building new wind and sun parks across the country for the past 30 years, increasing the amount of renewables in Britain rather than just buying and selling green energy that already exists.

What action can you take?

As Ecotricity is the only energy company that’s certified vegan, a great change you can make is to switch your energy supply to them.

There’s more, though. Most people don’t know about this hidden scandal of animal by-products being used to generate energy. Tell your friends, family and neighbours – the more people that know, the more likely it is that other energy companies will one day do something about it.

Ecotricity have been certified vegan since 2018 and use their profits to build new sources of green energy.

Join today – it’s one of the biggest things you can do as an individual to help fight the climate crisis.
